Eighteen years of patient growth in the highlands of San Pablo Apostol yields something truly extraordinary: Don Amado Arroqueno Mezcal, a rare expression built from one of the most prized and distinctive agave varieties in all of Oaxaca.


Master Distiller German Arellanes Arellanes cultivates Arroqueno maguey at 4,800 feet elevation, where the cooler mountain air and rich soil coax deep complexity from this towering plant. Unlike many wild agave species, Arroqueno is cultivatable, making this mezcal both an ecological choice and a window into a flavor profile virtually impossible to find elsewhere. The result is a spirit that is simultaneously rustic and refined, rooted in tradition yet endlessly surprising.


  • Nose: Bright floral aromatics of caramelized maguey, soft leather, and gentle smoke, with an inviting sweetness that draws you deeper.
  • Palate: Ripe cooked yam and quince open into persimmon, lemon verbena, and kaffir lime, layered beneath dark chocolate, espresso, and savory spice, all anchored by a supple, generous mouthfeel.
  • Finish: Long and mineral-driven, with balanced roasted character and a lingering savory warmth that speaks to the agave's remarkable depth.

Don Amado Arroqueno Mezcal holds its own beautifully neat or on a large rock, but its fruit-forward richness and earthy complexity also make it a standout in a Oaxacan Old Fashioned or a Mezcal Negroni where its layered character can shine through alongside bold companions.

In the highlands of southern Mexico, the renowned Arellanes family has been crafting one of the region's most celebrated mezcals since the late 1700s.

Eleven generations of continual mezcal distillation with a legendary commitment to craftsmanship and experimentation have culminated in a spirit that is simultaneously complex and approachable. Don Amado is made from earthen roasted maguey hearts which are, after crushing, fermented together with their piña fibers for a rich maguey character. The mash is then double distilled in small traditional ceramic clay pots. Aged varieties are matured in American oak casks previously used for barreling Pedro Domecq brandy.
