There are a lot of theories on where the salt and lime shtick comes from, the worst of them being that it was started to dissuade Americans from drinking Tequila when it first started showing up in bars in the United States. The rumor that it was started because all Tequilas were BAD and they NEEDED salt and lime is one that hurts the whole industry!
