Where does the name Tequila come from?
The origins Tequila are cloaked in mysticism and folklore, including where the name “Tequila” actually came from.
When the tequila volcano erupted over 200,000 years ago, and lava spilled out into the Tequila Valley, it cooled into a volcanic glass called obsidian. As pieces of obsidian get chipped away over time, the pieces form very sharp edges that the indigenous people of Mexico would use for hunting spear tips or tools.
Some say that the word “Tequila” in the Nahuatl language means, “the place that cuts” - read: when people traveled there, the rocks cut their feet!
