Flecha Azul was founded by Mexican pro golfer Abraham Ancer and entrepreneur Aron Marquez to honor their heritage, and Mark Wahlberg later joined as a principal investor. It is made in the town of Tequila, Jalisco, at a distillery working since 1926. Valley agave matures six to eight years, then cooks for 24 hours in masonry ovens and cools for 24 more. The juice ferments in open-air tanks with a yeast strain kept since 1926, then runs twice through copper pot stills. Master Distiller Lorena Diaz, one of the few women distillers in Tequila, oversees aging in bourbon-seasoned American oak.

Tequila is the town that gave the spirit its name, set at about 1,180 meters in the valley below the Tequila volcano, some 60 km northwest of Guadalajara. Blue agave covers the volcanic soils between the volcano and the canyon of the Río Grande de Santiago, a landscape UNESCO named a World Heritage Site in 2006. Large-scale agave distilling began here around 1600, and several of the oldest working distilleries in Mexico still operate in town. Tequila was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2003.
