Ilegal Mezcal Anejo is the spirit that converts skeptics into devotees, delivering the depth and elegance of a fine cognac or aged scotch through the unmistakable lens of Oaxacan mezcal. Aged 13 months in a blend of American and French oak, this is anejo mezcal at its most refined and inviting.

Crafted in Tlacoula, Oaxaca by master distillers Alvaro Hernandez, Armando Hernandez Lorenzo, and Eric Hernandez, Ilegal Anejo begins with Espadin agave roasted in traditional pit ovens before fermentation and distillation. The extended oak aging rounds out the smoke and amplifies the natural sweetness of the agave, resulting in a spirit that bridges the world of mezcal and premium aged whisky.

  • Nose: Cooked agave, roasted pears, clove, and bright orange peel
  • Palate: Maple, sweet agave, vanilla, caramel, and dark chocolate with a full, nearly creamy, round mouthfeel
  • Finish: Soft and smooth with lingering hints of oak and mesquite

Ilegal Anejo shines neat or on a single large ice cube, but it also elevates a classic Old Fashioned or a Mezcal Manhattan with its rich, wood-kissed sweetness.

Best served neat or over ice to appreciate its full complexity; crafted from Espadin agave in Tlacoula, Oaxaca.

Around 2004, Ilegal’s founder John Rexer began bringing mezcal down from Oaxaca to Antigua, Guatemala to supply his bar, Café No Sé. Sourcing unbranded mezcal from a variety of villages in Oaxaca including: Tlacolula, San Lorenzo, Sola De Vega, Santa Catarina Minas, Hierve el Agua, Santiago Matatlán and a few others, Ilegal mezcal was born. Ilegal mezcal, named for its illicit beginnings, is made in Oaxaca and certified Artisanal by the CRM. They are one of the few mezcals that ages their expressions, and takes pride in their reposado and añejo profiles. You’ll find hints of smoke right behind a mouthful of sweet agave
