One of the rarest aged tequilas ever produced, Fuenteseca Reserva Extra Anejo 21 Year is widely regarded as the world's first Grand Cru tequila, a landmark achievement from Master Distiller Enrique Fonseca that set out to push the boundaries of how long agave spirits could mature.
Harvested in 1993 and barreled in February 1994, this extraordinary expression from the Tequila region of Jalisco was produced exclusively in copper-pot stills and aged for over two decades. The barrels themselves tell a layered story: most of the spirit rested in casks that previously held Canadian rye whiskey, while one exceptional barrel had been used for California white wine, adding a rare dimension to the final blend. The casks were stored in a dry, earthen-floor aging room, allowing the Jalisco climate to slowly shape the spirit over more than 21 years.
- Nose: Rich and complex aromas of dried fruits, cooked agave, and toasted oak, with warm undercurrents of baking chocolate and aged wood.
- Palate: Deeply layered flavors of dried fruit, baking spice, toasted nuts, and cooked agave, balanced by notes of dark chocolate and well-integrated oak.
- Finish: Long and contemplative, with lingering wood, warm spice, and a whisper of sweet agave that rewards patience.
Given its depth and rarity, Fuenteseca Reserva Extra Anejo 21 Year is best appreciated neat or over a single large ice cube. For those who prefer a light showcase cocktail, a simple Old Fashioned prepared with a minimal touch of agave nectar lets the spirit's complexity remain the centerpiece.
Best served neat or with a single ice cube to fully appreciate its remarkable character. This ultra-premium extra anejo tequila is crafted from highland blue agave in the Tequila region of Jalisco, Mexico, under NOM 1146.
