Bozal Barril Mezcal Reserva is a rare and contemplative expression that embodies the soul of small-batch mezcal production, aged in barrel to coax out layers of complexity that set it apart from unaged counterparts. This reserva release from Bozal Mezcal represents the brand's dedication to honoring traditional Oaxacan craft while pushing the boundaries of what barrel-rested mezcal can be.

Bozal Mezcal has long championed the use of diverse agave varieties and time-honored production methods rooted in the mezcal-producing regions of Oaxaca and beyond. The Barril expression takes its name from the agave barril varietal, a wild agave prized for its earthy intensity and distinctive terroir-driven character. Slow roasting in earthen pits, open-air fermentation, and careful distillation in copper or clay stills define the artisanal approach that gives this mezcal its singular depth, with barrel aging adding a refined smoothness to the rustic backbone.

  • Nose: Wild and inviting aromas of roasted agave, damp earth, smoked wood, and subtle dried fruit with hints of vanilla and warm spice from the barrel influence
  • Palate: Rich and layered flavors of charred oak, dark chocolate, roasted peppers, dried citrus peel, and leather, underpinned by the unmistakable smokiness of pit-roasted agave
  • Finish: Long and warming with lingering notes of toasted wood, cocoa, and a gentle herbal sweetness that fades beautifully

Bozal Barril Mezcal Reserva holds its own beautifully in a Oaxacan Old Fashioned, where its smoky depth and barrel-mellowed sweetness shine alongside a touch of agave nectar and mole bitters. It is equally rewarding in a Mezcal Negroni, lending bold character to every sip.

Best enjoyed neat or over a single large ice cube to let the complexity fully unfold. Bozal Barril Mezcal Reserva is crafted from wild barril agave, a prized varietal harvested from the rugged landscapes of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Bozal, Spanish for wild or untamed, bottles mezcal from family palenques in Oaxaca, Guerrero and Durango, much of it from wild agave on steep, hard-to-reach hillsides. Agave is roasted in earthen pits, crushed by stone tahona or wooden mallet, fermented open-air with natural yeast and distilled twice in copper or clay. The range runs from Ensamble and Single Maguey bottlings to Sacrificio mezcals distilled with meat or fruit and clay-pot Reserva releases. For every maguey harvested, two are planted in a mountainside nursery and returned to the wild.
LOCATION

Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca

Santa Catarina Minas is a small town and municipality in the Ocotlán district, in the south of Oaxaca's Valles Centrales. It calls itself the cradle of mezcal, a title rooted in a mezcal and maguey culture traced back to the early Spanish colonial era. The town is best known for ancestral mezcal distilled in small clay pots rather than copper, which gives the spirit a soft, mineral character. Espadín is the mainstay, and producers also distill Arroqueño and wild karwinskii agaves such as Barril.
