El Rey Zapoteco Espadin is a traditional mezcal rooted in the highland agave traditions of Oaxaca, where Espadin agave has long been the cornerstone of artisanal mezcal production. Crafted with the reverence and slow hand of small-batch distillation, this expression captures the smoky, earthy soul that defines the category at its finest.

Produced from mature Espadin agave plants harvested at peak ripeness, El Rey Zapoteco follows time-honored Zapotec mezcal-making traditions passed down through generations of Oaxacan maestros. The agave hearts are roasted in earthen pit ovens, lending the spirit its characteristic smoke, before being crushed, fermented naturally, and double-distilled to coax out layers of complexity that mass production simply cannot replicate.

  • Nose: Inviting aromas of roasted agave, wood smoke, and dried herbs with subtle hints of citrus zest and earthy minerality
  • Palate: Rich and textured with flavors of charred oak, green pepper, tropical fruit, and a whisper of dark chocolate balanced by savory smoke
  • Finish: Long and warming with lingering smoke, toasted agave sweetness, and a clean mineral fade that rewards patient sipping

El Rey Zapoteco Espadin holds its own beautifully in a classic Mezcal Negroni or an Oaxacan Old Fashioned, where its smoky depth plays off bitter and sweet elements without losing its distinctive character.

Best enjoyed neat or with a single large ice cube to let the aromas open gradually. El Rey Zapoteco Espadin Mezcal is made from Espadin agave grown in the storied mezcal-producing valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico.

El Rey Zapoteco is a family mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, made by the Hernández Escobar family since 1960. They use only mature maguey from their own plantations, and their Espadín grows about 12 years before harvest. The agave is roasted underground, crushed with a tahona, fermented in wooden tinas and distilled twice in copper. The Joven Espadín, bottled at 45% ABV, won a Gold Medal at the 2020 Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. The family also makes Tobalá, Tepeztate, Cuishe, Jabalí and Cerrudo, plus a pechuga and an Añejo aged four years.
LOCATION

Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca

Santiago Matatlán sits at about 1,725 meters in the Tlacolula district of Oaxaca's Valles Centrales, roughly an hour southeast of Oaxaca City. Known as the world capital of mezcal, the town depends on growing maguey and making mezcal. Its dry valley floor and hillsides are planted with Espadín, and small family palenques in and around town still roast agave in earthen pits. Matatlán was founded in 1575, and its name comes from Nahuatl words meaning among the nets.
