Ilegal Mezcal Anejo is the spirit that converts skeptics into devotees, delivering the depth and elegance of a fine cognac or aged scotch through the unmistakable lens of Oaxacan mezcal. Aged 13 months in a blend of American and French oak, this is anejo mezcal at its most refined and inviting.

Crafted in Tlacoula, Oaxaca by master distillers Alvaro Hernandez, Armando Hernandez Lorenzo, and Eric Hernandez, Ilegal Anejo begins with Espadin agave roasted in traditional pit ovens before fermentation and distillation. The extended oak aging rounds out the smoke and amplifies the natural sweetness of the agave, resulting in a spirit that bridges the world of mezcal and premium aged whisky.

  • Nose: Cooked agave, roasted pears, clove, and bright orange peel
  • Palate: Maple, sweet agave, vanilla, caramel, and dark chocolate with a full, nearly creamy, round mouthfeel
  • Finish: Soft and smooth with lingering hints of oak and mesquite

Ilegal Anejo shines neat or on a single large ice cube, but it also elevates a classic Old Fashioned or a Mezcal Manhattan with its rich, wood-kissed sweetness.

Best served neat or over ice to appreciate its full complexity; crafted from Espadin agave in Tlacoula, Oaxaca.

Ilegal began around 2004, when New Yorker John Rexer started bringing mezcal from Oaxaca to Café No Sé, his bar in Antigua, Guatemala, and he created the brand in 2006. Today it is made by brothers Armando and Alvaro Hernández, fourth-generation Zapotec mezcaleros, at Palenque Mal de Amor in Santiago Matatlán. Ripe espadín is roasted for five to seven days in earthen pits, crushed by a horse-drawn tahona and fermented with wild yeast in pine vats. It is distilled twice in small copper stills, and the aged mezcals rest in new and used American oak.
LOCATION

Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca

Santiago Matatlán sits at about 1,725 meters in the Tlacolula district of Oaxaca's Valles Centrales, roughly an hour southeast of Oaxaca City. Known as the world capital of mezcal, the town depends on growing maguey and making mezcal. Its dry valley floor and hillsides are planted with Espadín, and small family palenques in and around town still roast agave in earthen pits. Matatlán was founded in 1575, and its name comes from Nahuatl words meaning among the nets.
