One of the rarest and most extraordinary extra anejo tequilas ever produced, Fuenteseca Reserva 18 Year represents nearly two decades of patient craftsmanship from Master Distiller Enrique Fonseca at NOM 1146 in the Tequila region of Jalisco. This is not simply aged tequila; it is a living record of time, oak, and agave transformed into something genuinely singular.
Distilled in September 1995 from a blend of 75% copper column still tequila and 25% copper alembic still tequila, the spirit began its journey in 180-liter Canadian white oak casks previously used to age Canadian rye whiskey, resting at 4,600 feet elevation in Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco. After six years, the lots were blended and re-barreled, with 47% returning to Canadian white oak and 53% moving into 220-liter European dark oak barrels previously used to age Bordeaux wine, where the tequila continued its slow, high-altitude evolution for over a decade more. Additive-free throughout, Fuenteseca Reserva is a testament to what patience and restraint can achieve.
- Nose: Deep dried fruit, toasted oak, vanilla custard, dark chocolate, and a whisper of tobacco with an undercurrent of roasted agave earthiness
- Palate: Rich and layered with dried cherry, butterscotch, cinnamon spice, aged leather, and a subtle mineral character that speaks to the highland terroir of Jalisco
- Finish: Exceptionally long and warming, with dark caramel, baking spice, and a lingering sweetness that fades slowly and beautifully
Given its complexity and depth, Fuenteseca Reserva 18 Year is best honored neat or over a single large ice cube. For those who enjoy spirit-forward cocktails, it makes an extraordinary foundation for an aged tequila Old Fashioned, where its oak and spice character can truly shine.
Best served neat in a Glencairn or snifter glass to fully appreciate its remarkable depth. Fuenteseca Reserva 18 Year is an additive-free extra anejo tequila produced from highland blue agave in the Tequila region of Jalisco, Mexico.
