Born from one of the rarest agaves in the world, IBA Mezcal Tepeztate is a bold, contemplative spirit that rewards those who seek depth over simplicity. Wild-harvested Tepeztate agave, left to mature for 20 to 25 years in the rugged Mexican highlands, forms the foundation of something truly extraordinary.

Tepeztate agave is notoriously difficult to cultivate and cannot be farmed, making every bottle of IBA Mezcal Tepeztate a direct expression of untamed terroir. IBAs proprietary harvest timing and small-batch distillation process coax the fullest possible character from this long-matured agave, yielding a mezcal of uncommon complexity and a finish that sets it apart from anything else in the category.

  • Nose: Deeply herbal and earthy aromas rise first, threaded with wild botanical notes and a lift of delicate florals that hint at the agaves long years in the highlands.
  • Palate: Rich and layered, with roasted earth, green herb, and a subtle mineral quality that speaks to the wild agave character at its core.
  • Finish: Long, smooth, and contemplative, with lingering floral and earthy tones that settle into a remarkably clean close.

IBA Mezcal Tepeztate holds its own beautifully when sipped neat, but its herbal complexity also makes it a compelling choice for a mezcal Negroni or a mezcal Sour, where its layered character can anchor the cocktail without being lost.

Best enjoyed neat or over a single large ice cube to let the aromas open fully. IBA Mezcal Tepeztate is crafted from 100% wild-harvested Tepeztate agave, a rare and singular expression from the mezcal-producing heartland of Mexico.

Location: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
IBÁ is a mezcal from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, and its name means heavens or skies in Zapotec. Each of the six bottles takes its color from the Oaxacan sky at a different hour, from dawn blue to deep night. The range runs from an Espadín Joven made with 8-year-old agave to a Tepeztate from wild agave that takes 20 to 25 years to mature. IBÁ uses its own process for harvest timing, slow fermentation and distillation, and keeps the smoke in check so the agave can show. Frutos Rojos and Cítricos get fresh fruit added during distillation.

Santiago Matatlán sits at about 1,725 meters in the Tlacolula district of Oaxaca's Valles Centrales, roughly an hour southeast of Oaxaca City. Known as the world capital of mezcal, the town depends on growing maguey and making mezcal. Its dry valley floor and hillsides are planted with Espadín, and small family palenques in and around town still roast agave in earthen pits. Matatlán was founded in 1575, and its name comes from Nahuatl words meaning among the nets.
