Atanasio is made by the Landeros family in San Pedro de los Landeros, just outside the town of Tequila, under NOM 1599. The Landeros brothers, sons of agave farmers, started distilling in 1995, and Maestro Tequilero René Carranza now signs every bottle with its year and lot. Valley agave aged six to seven years is cooked in a small stainless autoclave, crushed with a roller mill, fermented in open air with ambient yeast and distilled twice in stainless pot stills with deep well water. The name honors Tío Atanasio, who lived to 103, and means immortal.

San Pedro de los Landeros is a small farming community in the municipality of Tequila, just east of the town of Tequila. It lies in the agave country that runs from the foothills of the Tequila volcano down to the canyon of the Río Grande de Santiago. The climate is warm and semi-dry, averaging about 23°C, with most rain falling from June to October. Local families have farmed agave here for generations, and the community has its own tequila distillery.
