A tequila that is made traditionally through a slow cooking process, Ocho accentuates the agave flavour and it’s flavour develops over time.

A WINNING PARTNERSHIP

Tequila Ocho is made by Carlos Camarena, a third generation Tequilero, in partnership with Tomas Estes. This dynamic partnership delivers heritage and tradition, coupled with innovation. Carlos and Tomas produce tequila that is made slowly in an artisanal way. The result is a fine quality spirit that accentuates the agave flavour. It is concentrated and complex while remaining balanced and easy to drink.

CHARACTER

Tequila Ocho demonstrates that “terroir” exists in agave. Ocho’s single estates show through their distinct aroma and character. Tequila Ocho opens up and develops in the glass the same way a fine wine does.

INNOVATION

Ocho is the first tequila to designate both the year it was produced and the precise field from which the agave was harvested as is done with fine wines. Each estate, or “rancho” produces a limited amount of agave, each vintage of Ocho is both rare and collectable.

This is the tequila that began my sipping tequila journey. It is, I believe what a no additive blaco should be. I've had several others since I first tried Tequila Ocho, and I find myself always going back. Every time, it seems better than I remembered. Great tequila at this price point (or any other price point for that matter).

Overall
This is the tequila that turned me into an enthusiast. Prior to this, most bottles I tried over the years were mediocre at best or tasted too artificial (because they were), so tequila fell to near the bottom of my spirits like list. I then tried this...and wow! All of the profiles I liked about the other well made spirits at the top of my like list (the complexity, the harmony of flavors, the clean representation as whole) came through immediately. I now knew what tequila was supposed to taste like and that I actually loved it. Down the rabbit hole I was pushed. Ocho plata is delicious and consistently my baseline for blancos. It's also what I give to people who believe that blancos should only be hidden in cocktails. Oh the difference simplicity can make!
Overall
I first discovered this in 2017 while on a walk in Brooklyn. From the outside, the shop had an air of that hipster thing where shops value aesthetics over care and quality. Without many options in walking distance, I took a chance and soon noticed that this shop wasn’t what I thought. It was much smaller. The environment was more understated, with dim lights and sparse shelves. Taking a first pass thru, it became apparent that the selections available across all types were important. No more than 5 brands each. I’m not sure if it was the label, the bottle or the realization of how wrong I could be but Tequila Ocho stood out. It read “tradition” and the taste matched. While most brands today try to adapt to a broader pallette, Tequila Ocho stands firmly in its heritage. It reminded me of an unmarked bottle dangling in a red net that my friend handed me after a trip to Mexico. He shared the he got it from a random local who’s family had a small farm. Like the shop, it’s comes across understated. It tastes important. I’m confident any tequila drinker will find themselves surprised and consider whether they ever had tequila before.
