Bozal Madrecuishe Single Maguey Mezcal is a rare expression dedicated entirely to the wild Madrecuishe agave, a variety celebrated for the complex, savory character it brings to the glass. For the mezcal enthusiast seeking something truly singular, this bottling from Bozal Mezcal delivers a glimpse into the incredible diversity of agave spirits.

Sourced from wild-harvested Madrecuishe agave and crafted using traditional small-batch production methods, this single maguey mezcal honors the artisanal techniques passed down through generations of Oaxacan distilling culture. By dedicating the entire expression to one agave variety, Bozal allows the plant's natural terroir and character to take center stage without compromise.

  • Nose: Earthy and herbaceous aromas open with notes of roasted agave, dried botanicals, and a subtle mineral quality unique to the Madrecuishe variety.
  • Palate: A rich and savory mid-palate unfolds with vegetal complexity, hints of tropical fruit, smoked wood, and a pleasantly rustic depth that sets this expression apart from highland blanco mezcals.
  • Finish: Long and lingering, with a dry, smoky warmth and echoes of dark earth and wild herbs that invite another sip.

Bozal Madrecuishe shines when enjoyed neat so nothing masks its distinctive single maguey character, but it also brings remarkable depth to a Mezcal Negroni or a smoky Oaxacan Old Fashioned for those who enjoy agave spirits in cocktail form.

Best served neat or with a splash of water to open the nose, in a traditional clay copita or a wide-mouthed glass. Bozal Madrecuishe Single Maguey Mezcal is produced from wild Madrecuishe agave sourced from the mezcal-producing regions of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Bozal, Spanish for wild or untamed, bottles mezcal from family palenques in Oaxaca, Guerrero and Durango, much of it from wild agave on steep, hard-to-reach hillsides. Agave is roasted in earthen pits, crushed by stone tahona or wooden mallet, fermented open-air with natural yeast and distilled twice in copper or clay. The range runs from Ensamble and Single Maguey bottlings to Sacrificio mezcals distilled with meat or fruit and clay-pot Reserva releases. For every maguey harvested, two are planted in a mountainside nursery and returned to the wild.
LOCATION

Miahuatlán, Oaxaca

Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz is the main town of Oaxaca's Sierra Sur, set at an average elevation of about 1,600 meters in the mountains south of Oaxaca City. Its name comes from the Nahuatl for place of the corn tassel, and it was a Zapotec trading center before the Spanish arrived. The district is known for its diversity of agave, with Espadín and Tobalá growing alongside tall karwinskii agaves such as Madrecuishe, Tobasiche and Barril. Small family palenques here still roast agave in earthen pits.
